Rich in History, Serving the Community

What is the Foundation
How can you help?

Our community’s health care history begins in 1886 when Dr. J.W. Hart opened Huntsville’s first facility on Chaffey St., called the Huntsville Hospital. Eight years later, Dr. F.L. Howland opened the General Hospital, a wooden structure with room for 35 patients. It was replaced two years later with a brick building for 100 patients. These two hospitals served the people of Huntsville and the surrounding area until funding from the provincial government was discontinued around 1903.

HuntsvilleIt wasn’t until 1944, long after the pioneering efforts of Drs. Hart and Howland, that Huntsville once again had a hospital. A committee of concerned citizens came together to build a facility so that people in Muskoka and East Parry Sound wouldn’t have to travel elsewhere for health care. The new hospital, financed by the Red Cross, opened in 1949. This building subsequently closed when the new Huntsville District Memorial Hospital opened in 1978, but was reborn several years later as Fairvern Nursing Home.

The Huntsville Hospital is a vital part of our community; it has played an active and important role in providing excellent health care for people living and vacationing in our area.
